Biography
Dr. Gabriela Mustata Wilson is an internationally recognized leader in health informatics and health innovation, dedicated to translating research, data, and emerging technologies into practical solutions that strengthen health systems, improve population health, and empower communities. With a multidisciplinary background spanning chemical engineering, molecular and computational sciences, health informatics, and public health, she has built a career at the intersection of research, innovation, education, and societal impact.
Dr. Wilson serves as Director of the Louisiana Center for Health Innovation (LCHI) and Professor in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she holds the Dr. J. Robert Rivet Endowed Chair and the Acadian Ambulance Service/BORSF Eminent Scholar Endowed Chair in Health Informatics. Through LCHI, she leads interdisciplinary initiatives that bring together academia, healthcare, government, industry, and communities to advance digital health, strengthen the healthcare workforce, address health disparities, and translate innovation into measurable health and economic impact.
Her international career spans academia, healthcare, industry, and interdisciplinary research, with particular emphasis on health and biomedical informatics, data-driven innovation, emerging technologies, and workforce development. A passionate advocate for mentorship, collaboration, and innovation education, she is committed to developing the next generation of researchers, inventors, and healthcare leaders while fostering partnerships that translate scientific discoveries into real-world solutions.
Dr. Wilson's contributions have earned national and international recognition, including the 2023 HIMSS Changemaker in Health Award and election as a Fellow of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (FIAHSI), and the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA), as well as Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). In 2026, she was selected as one of only 22 inaugural National Invention Ambassadors nationwide and the sole representative from Louisiana, joining a distinguished network established by NAI and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to advance invention, entrepreneurship, intellectual property education, and innovation. She was also selected for the inaugural 2027 Leadership Louisiana Health Fellows class, bringing together leaders from healthcare, business, higher education, government, and public policy to address Louisiana's most pressing health challenges. Dr. Wilson serves as Editor-in-Chief of Informatics for Health and Social Care, an international peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor & Francis, and Vice President of the American Romanian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
